Riding on a Tow Boat

We had an unexpected adventure on a tow boat this weekend! Our neighborhood is right across from a tow company in Chattanooga. The owners have welcomed neighbors annually aboard the Dolphin for a tour. Our small group of 4 yesterday was treated to a ride as well - we left the dock, picked up a barge and moved it up river to a new location. The whole ride was thrilling - especially having seen so many barges along our Great Loop travels!

After we docked we got a tour of the engine room. Each engine is 1500 hp and there is a very cool rudder system for moving the boat.

Here you can see the pilot, Joey, and our neighbor, James, who coordinated the tour. Joey has piloted boats for this company for around 40 + years. You can see the handles for the rudders in front of James (red vest).

Hanging out in the pilot house.

Pushing the barge.

The big crane at the dock.

Such a great morning on the river. Any day on the water is a good one!
